Uber knows you'll probably pay surge pricing if your battery is about to die
Uber's surge pricing can be annoying. Why pay more if you can wait 15 minutes and pay less? And that's exactly the point — surge pricing is meant to apply downward pressure to demand through an increase in pricing. But, it turns out, riders are more likely to accept surge pricing if their phone is about to die, according to Keith Chen, Uber's head of economic research. Chen appeared on a recent episode of NPR's Hidden Brain podcast and shared some curious notes on the human behavior that Uber h..>> view originalUp close with the Moto G4 Plus, the best from a puzzling new lineup
First things first: To quickly recap, the G4 Plus runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with an octa-core Snapdragon 617 chipset, and either 2GB or 4GB of RAM. The pricier 4GB model is paired with either 32GB or 64GB of storage, while the lower-specced version has only 16GB of storage. It's a good thing, then, that the microSD slot takes cards as large as 128GB. This particular Plus was a 4GB/64GB model, making it a terribly snappy little machine. Apparently, Apple believes the answer to its slumping sales is a makeover of its 244 retail stores. According to Buzzfeed "the future of the Apple Store looks like a normal Apple Store, but with a bunch of trees." While that is probably an over simplification, it seems odd that Apple is focusing on a store redesign when what it really needs is to get back on the innovation track, improve falling software quality, and provide better service to existing customers at its genius bars. Ski-jump, hooked, piggy or snubbed — there are almost as many nose shapes as there are people in the world. Now, new research has uncovered four genes that govern some of the variation in the human olfactory organ. The new findings could help scientists understand the roots of this variation, the researchers said. Robotic Wrist-Worn Joint Gives You Another Hand “Finding out the role each gene plays helps us to piece together the evolutionary path from Neanderthal to modern humans,” study co-aut..>> view originalA closer look at Google's modular phone prototype
Ara is mechanically simpler and more complex than earlier versions. That's a weird phrase to write, but it's actually true. Caramago isn't trying to pull off some of the crazier ideas that we saw in earlier versions, like magnetic locking mechanisms and wireless capacitive communication from module to body, but in their place it's a system that will allow more space for modules and uses come clever hardware magic to protect the contact points for the connection. Snapping a module in and ejectin..>> view originalGoogle and Levi's team up on a “connected” jacket that lets you answer calls, use maps and more
At Google’s I/O conference today, Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) research unit offered an update on its interactive textiles project unveiled last year, Project Jacquard. ATAP’s Ivan Poupyrev announced that the company was collaborating with iconic clothing company, Levi’s, to launch a “connected” smart jacket aimed at urban cyclists that will allow wearers to do things like control their music, answer phone calls, access navigation and more, all by tapping and swiping on the..>> view originalAggressive, man-eating Nile crocodiles lived in the Everglades for years
This 2012 photo provided by Joe Wasilewski shows a Nile crocodile he found in Homestead, Fla. University of Florida researchers recently published a paper showing that reptiles captured in 2009, 2001 and 2014 are Nile crocs. ( Joe Wasilewski via AP) It’s a small problem, but invasive species almost always start out that way. Researchers at the University of Florida examined the DNA of three reptiles pulled out of the Everglades swamp and found that they were invasive Nile crocodiles, and tha..>> view original
